Invest in Agriculture, Obi Urges FG

Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for increased investment in agriculture as a solution to Nigeria’s escalating hunger crisis.

In a statement issued Thursday via X, Obi made the appeal during his visit to Mary Agro Farms in Obeleagu-Umana, Enugu State. The visit followed his participation in the Peaceland University conference in Enugu on Wednesday.

Obi expressed delight at the significant transformation he witnessed at the farm since his last visit over two years ago, when he supported their pilot scheme in Udi. He praised the farm for its expansion and the adoption of innovative agricultural practices, which he described as key to ensuring food security in Nigeria.

“I was delighted to witness a remarkable transformation that underscores their commitment to excellence and growth,” Obi said. He emphasized the importance of supporting productive ventures to combat the country’s hunger crisis.

To further support the farm’s efforts, Obi donated ₦20 million to Mary Agro Farms, urging them to continue their innovation and productivity during the current period of food scarcity and high inflation.

Obi referenced alarming statistics from the United Nations and Save the Children International, which warn that 33 million Nigerians could face severe hunger by 2025, and 5.4 million children are at risk of acute malnutrition.

“For a nation already battling severe hunger, these alarming statistics call for immediate action,” Obi stated. He urged both state and federal governments to invest in food production to alleviate the growing food crisis.

He also commended the management and staff of Mary Agro Farms for their dedication and resilience in the face of these challenges.
