The House of Representatives in Nigeria has passed a bill for the second reading aimed at amending the 1999 Constitution to create a new state known as Ogoja State in the South-South region. The bill, sponsored by Hon. Godwin Offiono and three other lawmakers, seeks to carve out the new state from the existing Cross River State.

During a session on Thursday, the bill was approved following a voice vote conducted by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. The proposal now moves to the committee on constitutional review for further examination and deliberation.

If successful, the establishment of Ogoja State would mark a significant change in the geopolitical landscape of the South-South region, reflecting ongoing discussions about state creation and local governance in Nigeria.
