A delegation from the Police Service Commission (PSC) has arrived in Kabo, Kano State, to carry out a needs assessment for the proposed Police Service Commission Institute. This forward-thinking institution is designed to offer specialized short-course training for PSC staff and public officers worldwide, with the goal of strengthening police oversight.
The delegation is headed by retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Taiwo Lakanu, alongside Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, the Commission’s Secretary. Their visit follows a recent inspection by PSC Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), who expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing construction of the Institute, highlighting its potential to enhance the strategic and effective nature of police oversight.
“This Institute represents a groundbreaking initiative for Africa,” DIG Argungu noted during his prior visit. “It will provide a valuable opportunity for African nations and others around the globe to acquire critical knowledge on police oversight.”
During their assessment, the PSC team evaluated the necessary requirements for the Institute’s establishment. The technical team, led by Deputy Director Solomon Jibrin, collaborated with project architects and engineers to ensure all operational aspects were thoroughly reviewed.
Additionally, the delegation met with local leaders, including the District Head of Kabo, Idris Muhammad Adamu Dankabo, who was represented by Mai Unguwa Isah Kanye. DIG Lakanu expressed appreciation to Senator Jibrin Barau, a notable son of Kabo and the Deputy Senate President, for his substantial contributions, which included the donation of land and facilities for the Institute’s foundation.
DIG Lakanu emphasized the significant police presence in Kano, underscored by the proximity of the Zone 1 Police Headquarters and the Police Academy Wudil. He reiterated that the Institute will attract security and public service officers from around the world for training programs designed to enhance police oversight capabilities.
In acknowledging the efforts of the local Divisional Police Officer, CSP Ado Salisu, DIG Lakanu praised the officer’s crucial role in maintaining peace in Kabo and committed to recognizing and rewarding excellence within the police force.
The establishment of the Police Service Commission Institute is a significant advancement towards improving police oversight and promoting international collaboration in security training, promising to bolster the capabilities of law enforcement throughout the continent.
