Liu Bei, the owner of an Abuja-based Chinese retail shop, has responded to criticisms over her store’s alleged discrimination against Nigerians. In a statement both Chinese and English on Tuesday, Bei clarified that her establishment serves residents, workers, and visitors, irrespective of nationality.

Contrary to reports labeling it a supermarket, Bei emphasized that her shop is a small retail outlet aimed at meeting the essential needs of the local community. She expressed feeling intimidated by the presence of unfamiliar individuals outside her store and sought to provide context for the situation.

The controversy arose after the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission sealed her store and issued a summon notice and threat of sanctions following allegations of discriminatory practices.

Bei refuted claims of discrimination, stating that she sells to anyone who visits her store, including Nigerians. She highlighted her positive relationships with Nigerian employees and customers, underscoring her commitment to inclusivity.

Regarding the incident captured on video involving a security guard and a visitor, Bei expressed regret and clarified that she had served two Nigerian customers on that particular day.

Furthermore, she explained that while her shop operates within the Royal Choice Estate, Airport Road, Abuja, there are community regulations governing visitor access for safety reasons, which may limit entry for some individuals.

Bei concluded by expressing remorse for any misunderstanding and reiterated her commitment to serving the community. She also disclosed plans to downsize operations and eventually close the shop since December 2023.
