The Nigerian government has conveyed its sadness in response to the recent announcement made by the Military authority in the Republic of Niger, declaring the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Francisca Omayuli, it was emphasized that ECOWAS has diligently worked for half a century to foster peace, prosperity, and democracy in the West African region.

The statement affirms Nigeria’s solidarity with ECOWAS, emphasizing the importance of adhering to due process and a shared commitment to safeguarding and reinforcing the rights and welfare of all citizens in Member States.

Nigeria’s diplomatic efforts have been directed toward resolving challenges within the ECOWAS family, with a sincere and good-faith approach. However, it is now apparent that those opting to leave the community do not share the same goodwill.

The statement criticizes unelected leaders who engage in public posturing, potentially denying their people the sovereign right to make fundamental choices regarding freedom of movement, trade, and choosing their leaders.

Despite these developments, Nigeria expresses its willingness for continued engagement with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, with the hope that all citizens in the region can persist in enjoying the economic benefits and democratic values that ECOWAS upholds.

Furthermore, Nigeria appeals to the international community to sustain its support for ECOWAS and the vision of fostering closer partnerships, cooperation, and integration in the West African region.
