    WAFCON: I’m glad we achieved our Mission X target – NIS DG

    The Director General/ Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports, Philip Shaibu, has congratulated the Super Falcons for their superlative performance against the Lionesses of Morocco in the finals of the women Africa Nation Cup.

    The Super Falcons of Nigeria achieved a stunning comeback to defeat Morocco 3–2 in the WAFCON final on Saturday night to win their 10th title. Morocco had led 2–0 at halftime with goals from Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy but in the second half, Nigeria responded through a 64th-minute penalty by Esther Okoronkwo, followed by Folashade Ijamilusi’s equalizer in the 71st minute.

    The decisive goal came in the 88th minute when Jennifer Echegini finished off a set-piece delivered by Okoronkwo. The victory, secured at the Stade Olympique in Rabat, completed Nigeria’s “Mission X” campaign, further cementing their dominance in African women’s football.

    In his congratulatory message signed by Ben Ogbemudia, his Media Adviser, Shaibu, who is the immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo state said:

    “The Super Falcons of Nigeria have once again etched their name in African football history by clinching the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in a thrilling final on Saturday”.

    The NIS Boss who fulfilled his promised of going to Morocco to Cheer up the Nigeria ladies in the finals match showdown held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco commended the technical crew of the super falcons, the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation and the Mallam Shehu Dikko-led National Sports Commission for their efforts in achieving the set target of mission x.

    The win marks Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title, extending their record as the most successful team in the tournament’s history.
