The Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Joint Campus Committee (NANS JCC), has expressed its strong disapproval of the actions taken by the university’s management to disrupt the forthcoming Student Union Government (SUG) election, citing concerns about the erosion of democratic principles within the institution.
In a collective statement signed by Comrade Adeyanju Oluwafemi, Chairperson of NANS JCC Ogun Axis, Comrade Okereafor Bestman, National President of the Progressive Students Movement (PSM), Comrade Olufemi Owoeye, Secretary of NANS Ogun Axis, and Comrade Sodiq Hassan, Public Relations Officer of NANS Ogun Axis, the students rejected the electoral committee established by the university’s vice-chancellor. They asserted that this committee’s formation was a blatant imposition and a clear violation of the constitution.
The statement also cautioned aspiring candidates for various positions in the upcoming SUG election against obtaining forms from what they deemed an “illegal committee” appointed by the vice-chancellor.
Furthermore, the students highlighted a series of troubling incidents where the OOU school management allegedly undermined the will of the student body and disregarded established constitutional procedures, casting doubt on the integrity of the electoral process.
In a portion of the statement, NANS JCC/Ogun Axis declared, “The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS JCC/Ogun Axis, strongly condemns these actions by the OOU school management. We call for a return to democratic norms, adherence to constitutional procedures, and respect for the will of the student body. NANS Ogun also strongly condemns the alleged selling of aspiration forms by the illegal electoral committee. We categorically state that this is a charade that will not stand. We advise potential aspirants to shun any misleading, devilish, and controversial forms, as they do not come from the appropriately constituted authority.”
