The Lagos State Government has issued a directive to law enforcement agencies to detain drivers operating vehicles with faulty or incomplete registration number plates. This includes individuals who do not have any license plates affixed to their vehicles.

During a conversation with journalists, Abdulhafiz Toriola, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, highlighted the widespread occurrence of improper use of number plates within Lagos.

Toriola pointed out that Section 16 of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 supports this measure, underlining the fact that a vehicle without a proper number plate can be employed in criminal activities that might remain untraceable.

He emphasized, “The primary purpose of using a number plate is for accurate identification and security, as it is unique to each vehicle. Law enforcement agencies have been tasked with apprehending offenders. I encourage vehicle owners to adhere to the State Government’s directive in order to reinforce the existing security framework.”

This move aims to enhance security and accountability by ensuring that vehicles on the road are properly registered and identifiable through their respective number plates.
