60 Women Accuse Former Harrods Owner Mohamed Al-Fayed of Sexual Abuse

A legal team representing over 60 women has come forward with allegations of sexual abuse against the late Mohamed Al-Fayed, former owner of Harrods department store. The allegations were highlighted following a recent BBC documentary that featured testimonies from multiple women claiming they were raped and sexually abused by Al-Fayed during his tenure at the luxury retailer.

The lawyers stated, “The response has simply been enormous. We can confirm that we now represent 60 survivors as part of our claim, with more to come.” They noted that since the documentary aired, they have received inquiries from potential victims globally, indicating that the claims may extend beyond the UK.

Al-Fayed, who passed away last year at 94, has joined the ranks of high-profile figures facing sexual abuse allegations, similar to figures like Harvey Weinstein. The legal representatives mentioned credible evidence of abuse at various Al-Fayed properties, including Fulham Football Club.

British prosecutors previously investigated allegations against Al-Fayed in 2008 and 2013, but charges were not brought due to a lack of “realistic prospect of conviction.” The lawyers have called for an independent review of the claims, emphasizing that their clients have lost faith in the processes at Harrods.

In response to the allegations, Harrods’ Managing Director, Michael Ward, acknowledged a “toxic culture of secrecy, intimidation, fear of repercussion, and sexual misconduct” during Al-Fayed’s ownership, although he claimed he was unaware of any criminal activities.

Accusations against Al-Fayed include instances of women undergoing invasive gynecological examinations as part of a selection process for jobs near him, with the results shared with him. Those who attempted to report their experiences allegedly faced threats, demotions, and false allegations to force them out of their positions.

Al-Fayed sold Harrods in 2010 for approximately £1.5 billion ($2.2 billion) to the Qatar Investment Authority.
