3.7 million Nigerians living in IDPs camps – Doro

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Benard Doro, has said an estimated 3.7 million Nigerians are currently living as internally displaced persons, IDPs, across the country.

Doro stated this on Friday while fielding questions on The Morning Show on Arise Television.

According to him, the figure is an estimate due to the dynamic nature of displacement in the country.

He explained that displacement is not static, as some affected persons are being resettled while new cases are recorded in different parts of the country.

The minister, however, noted that most of those currently residing in IDP camps have been properly documented, adding that the government has access to the majority of individuals living in the camps.

Doro said: “In terms of the figure, you know, it is very difficult just tell you that this number is exact, but it is estimated around 3.7 million. The reason is, this is not a static situation.

“The issue of displacement in our country is a dynamic one. And so there are movements, you are resettling people, others are being added.

“But we have broadly the figure of around 3.7 million, and to those who are in IDP camps at the moment, most of them are documented, and we do have access to most of them that are currently residing in IDP camps.”
