Monday back page STRAIGHT Talk by Obinna F. Nwachukwu
No matter what you may think about him, His Excellency, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, CON, is a colossus, and an enigma in the Nigerian political space. And whether you love him or hate him, you cannot ignore him. Not because he forces himself on your face, but because, his personality is one you cannot afford to overlook. As a public administrator, one thing stands him out. He is not averse to hard work. He is also not afraid of criticisms. Neither does he run away from a fight.
For instance, in today’s Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), his good work shines through the walkway, rural communities, urban centres and remote villages. His determination to perform and his unwavering commitment to both his ministerial assignment and his principal, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, are not common.
As a leader with vision and mission, the excellent discharge of his responsibilities has made even his worst enemies to swallow their venom in awe- a complex emotion characterized by a deep sense of wonder and admiration, often mixed with a slight degree of fear or reverence- which has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.
His movement from Chairman, Obio-Akpor local government, to Chief of Staff, Rivers State government, Minister of State for Education, Governor of Rivers State and now Honourable Minister of the FCT are all written in golden pens leading to his been given the name ‘Mr Project.’, all of which are testament to his unwavering dedication to public service, human capacity development, and people-oriented projects.
One of his most striking attributes is the unwavering commitment to the welfare of his people. His leadership style is defined by a deep empathy for the needs and aspirations of the citizens.
Wike can be viewed from the prism of notable international democrats and world class administrators. Mohandas and Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, was a political and spiritual leader who played a pivotal role in India’s struggle for independence from British rule. His philosophy of non-violence and emphasis on truth, justice, and equality continue to resonate globally.
Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as the President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
Mandela’s leadership and commitment to non-violence were instrumental in bringing about a peaceful transition from minority rule to a multi-racial democracy.
Sir Winston Churchill was a British statesman who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during the World War II. Churchill’s leadership and oratory skills played a crucial role in rallying the British people during the darkest days of the war and inspired them to stand firm against Nazi aggression.
These are some of the men who entered history books for the right reasons based on their significant impact in the society.
Wike’s eight years tenure in Rivers state was marked by numerous achievements and positive changes that transformed the state and improved the welfare and living conditions of the people
As state governor, Wike implemented policies and initiatives that attracted businesses, stimulated job creation, and increased investments.
As a result, unemployment rates decreased while state economy flourished.
Obviously, infrastructure development was the hallmark of Wike’s administration in the state. He recognized the importance of modern infrastructure for the state and took significant steps to improve it.
He launched ambitious infrastructure projects like constructing a whooping thirteen flyover bridges, road constructions, expansions, bridges and innovative public transportation systems.
These initiatives enhanced connectivity and improved the overall quality of life for Rivers people.
No wonder these efforts paid off and earned him recognition from former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who named him “Mr. Projects” and later, a presidential award of “Infrastructure Icon of Nigeria”.
To ensure that Rivers State stamped its authority in the Nigerian football, the two professional clubs namely: Sharks FC and Dolphins FC were merged into Rivers United FC. The result was an impressive dominance in the Nigerian Professional Football League that saw “The Pride of Rivers” (as Rivers United is known) winning the NPFL in 2021/ 2022 season, the first NPFL title by a Rivers based side since the Dolphins won it in 2011.
With adequate funding from the government, Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt won the National Women League a record five times and 8 times as Federation Cup champions. These earned Wike the prestigious Power of Sports (Africa) award as governor.
He prioritized education and worked tirelessly to improve the state’s education system. He increased funding for all the tertiary institutions in the state, introduced innovative programmes, and implemented policies to raise academic standards.
He championed healthcare initiatives that aimed to provide better access to affordable and quality healthcare for Rivers people. He also invested in healthcare infrastructure by providing doctors with standard residential quarters
As governor, Wike was committed to environmental protection and sustainability by implementing policies that reduced carbon emissions, promoted renewable energy sources, and conserved natural resources.
And throughout his 8 years tenure, Governor Wike demonstrated fiscal responsibility by managing the state’s budget effectively.
Wike built standard quarters for Judges as well as members of the State House of Assembly.
In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has equally written his name in gold with the projects he has completed and ongoing in various area councils of the FCT.
According to the Minister, “These accomplishments demonstrate our collective effort and commitment to building a prosperous, unified, progressive FCT”.
Throughout his career as a politician, Wike has consistently demonstrated a willingness to listen and respond to the concerns of the people.
Wike’s appointment as the Minister of the FCT was met with widespread acclaim, as well as fear especially by those not used to hardwork and dedication to duty. He wasted no time in telling Nigerians that he came to work and nothing more. Hence, he brought to the FCT, his unique blend of vision, expertise, and passion in the discharge of national assignments.
He rolled out a 10-point agenda with focus on issues of security, city sanitation, preservation of the Abuja Master Plan, infrastructure development, restoration of green areas, removal of shanties, blocking of revenue leakages, ground rents payment, among other deliverables.
Less than two months after assuming office, Wike got presidential approval for the implementation of an FCT Civil Service Commission ending a five years jinx after the National Assembly passed the FCT Civil Service Commission bill into law.
The law enables FCTA Civil Servants to rise to the peak of their career as permanent secretaries and Head of Service in the Administration. He also got approval for the FCT to generate and manage its Internally Generated Revenue( IGR)
Other key achievements are; massive infrastructural development, including the construction of new urban and rural roads, which has dramatically improved connectivity and accessibility for residents.
For instance, rural road development has significantly enhanced economic activities in rural communities, and thereby creating job opportunities and improving livelihoods.
The FCT administration under his watch has also prioritized education by rehabilitating several schools, ensuring that children and teachers stay in conducive environments and that the future generation is empowered with quality education
According to Wike, “Our efforts to enhance security which included the provision of over 100 vehicles to the various security agencies and implementation of bolder and innovative strategies have yielded positive results. Residents can now sleep peacefully at night, confident of the safety of their neighborhoods.
“The creation of the Mandate Secretariat for Youth Development and other administrative changes have improved efficiency, accountability, and service delivery, strengthened governance, and made it more responsive to residents’ needs.
“By fostering an enabling environment for foreign and local investments, the FCT witnessed visible economic growth. This has been particularly impactful in rural areas, where infrastructural improvements have sparked economic activities and development.”, he said
However, Minister Wike did not take up the challenge of road infrastructure alone. Health care, Water, education, and agricultural sectors, are equally receiving the needed attention.
He is also solving the problem of transportation in the FTC through public-private sector participation, aimed at easing transportation issues and ensuring smooth mobility for residents. Expanding programs for youth employment and positive engagement to harness the energy and creativity of young people are also being handled by the current administration. These are but few of the massive transformation projects currently taking place in the FCT
Indeed, who does not know Nyesom Wike and the great work he is doing in Nigeria?
