Wealth Amidst Claims of Probity: Governor Sule’s Accountant-General Under Fire

    Published on

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, who began his administration with a firm commitment to probity and transparency, is now facing mounting criticism over the extravagant lifestyle of his Accountant-General, Dr. Musa Ahmed Mohammed.

The irony of the situation is stark: while Governor Sule touts his adherence to the rule of law, his Accountant-General’s lavish lifestyle is raising serious questions about the financial conduct within his administration.

Upon assuming office, Governor Sule vowed to uphold strict fiscal discipline. He abolished arbitrary government spending and set up the Bureau for Public Procurement, led by Dr. Dominic Bako, to enhance transparency in public spending. The Governor’s reforms were aimed at ending the alleged practice of financial payments being made from the Governor’s office to the Accountant of the Government House.

However, the Governor’s claims of probity seem increasingly hollow in light of Dr. Musa Ahmed Mohammed’s actions. The Accountant-General, once known to have struggled financially after losing two consecutive bids for the Nasarawa/Toto Federal Constituency seat, has recently made headlines for his extravagant displays of wealth.

The wedding of his son, reportedly costing hundreds of millions of naira, and his generous donations during the last Sallah festivities in Nasarawa Local Government have raised eyebrows.

As a state official, Dr. Mohammed’s income is a matter of public record, and many are questioning how a public servant can afford such a lavish lifestyle. A resident of Nasarawa expressed the growing public concern, saying, “If Governor Sule claims to be a man of probity, then where is his Accountant-General getting his resources to fund such a lifestyle?”

Critics argue that Dr. Mohammed’s newfound wealth, coupled with his ambition to run for the governorship of Nasarawa State, casts doubt on the Governor’s commitment to transparency. Dr. Mohammed is regularly seen wearing expensive clothing and accessories worth millions, further fueling speculation. “No public servant can legitimately afford such luxury on a civil servant’s salary,” another concerned citizen remarked.

The Accountant-General’s growing political aspirations also raise questions about how he intends to fund his gubernatorial campaign. It is common knowledge that Nigerian politics is heavily monetized, and running a serious campaign requires substantial financial backing. “How does an Accountant-General amass the billions needed to run a campaign without engaging in questionable financial practices?” a political analyst asked.

The situation has led many to question whether Governor Sule is complicit in Dr. Mohammed’s activities. Speculation is rife that the Governor is turning a blind eye, allowing his anointed successor to accumulate wealth unchecked. “If Governor Sule is indeed looking the other way, what kind of legacy is he leaving for the people of Nasarawa State? Is this the probity he promised?” one critic queried.

After only one year in office, Dr. Mohammed’s accumulation of wealth has become glaringly obvious. His ability to fund a lavish lifestyle and a potential gubernatorial campaign suggests that significant sums of money are being siphoned off from public coffers. This has led to further questions about the Governor’s role in the matter. Is the Accountant-General acting alone, or is the Governor also benefiting from these funds?

The people of Nasarawa are watching the unfolding relationship between Governor Sule and his Accountant-General closely. Several key questions are being raised: Is Dr. Mohammed enriching himself for a personal political agenda, or is there a deeper collusion between him and the Governor? Where does this leave the Governor’s promises of probity and transparency?

As these questions loom large, the citizens of Nasarawa are left wondering if they will once again be victims of their leaders’ corruption, only for these same leaders to use their ill-gotten wealth to buy back power in future elections.
