The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has donated a newly constructed Pressure Swing Absorption Oxygen Plant worth over ₦1 billion to the Bauchi State Government. The facility was officially handed over at the Azare General Hospital, located in Katagum Local Government Area, on Tuesday.
Key Contributors to the Project
UNICEF Country Representative in Nigeria, Christian Munduate, acknowledged the support of the Government of Canada and IHS Nigeria as key donors that made the project possible.
Munduate commended Bauchi State’s partnership with UNICEF, noting that this donation represents a significant step toward improving maternal, newborn, and child health in Bauchi and Nigeria. He highlighted the plant’s role in addressing critical medical needs, particularly treating newborns and children suffering from pneumonia and other respiratory conditions.
Benefits of the New Facility
Munduate described the oxygen plant as “a beacon of innovation and resilience.” He added that it would save countless lives while serving as a model initiative for similar projects across Nigeria.
Furthermore, the *Level 2 Newborn Unit*, equipped with advanced medical facilities, has also been established at Azare General Hospital. According to Munduate, this unit will significantly reduce neonatal mortality rates and improve health outcomes for vulnerable newborns.
He urged that the Level 2 Newborn Care Unit should be staffed with trained healthcare professionals to maximize its impact.
State Government’s Commitment
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, represented by his deputy, Auwal Jatau, expressed gratitude to UNICEF for the project. He emphasized that partnerships like this are vital for sustainable development and improving healthcare delivery.
State Commissioner for Health, Sani Muhammad, also praised UNICEF for this life-saving facility. He assured that the state government would prioritize its maintenance and protection to ensure long-term benefits for the people of Bauchi State.
