The United Nations Environmental
Programme (UNEP) says the world is set to breach the critical 1.5°C warming limit within the next few years.
UN Secretary-General, António Guterrer said “The fight for 1.5 degrees is the fight for humanity. What it means is that at 1.5°C, extreme weather, glacier melting, sea-level rise and ecosystem loss will intensify”.
Climate scientists are also warning that the world will soon witness extreme heat, floods and drought before the end of 2026.
UNEP is the leading global environmental authority under the United Nations.
It coordinate the UN’s environmental work and help countries protect the environment while promoting sustainable development.
The agency also warns of the need for nations to adopt measures that aid pollution control, especially handling of plastic wastes, air pollution, and chemical waste.
