Ukrainian soldier killed, others wounded in Russian strike

A Russian missile attack on a Ukrainian military training facility has left one soldier dead and several others injured, Ukraine’s Land Forces said on Tuesday.

According to the statement, 11 soldiers were wounded, while another 12 required medical attention for stress reactions and shock. Troops had received a danger alert before the strike, but as they moved to shelter, “a group of servicemen fell into the zone of destruction of cluster munitions,” the Land Forces reported.

The location of the strike has not been disclosed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not reference the attack in his morning post on X, instead thanking European leaders for their backing and praising U.S. President Donald Trump for his “determination” in seeking an end to Russia’s war. Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday for talks on a potential peace deal.

Zelensky, however, expressed doubts over Moscow’s intentions. “We see that the Russian army is not preparing to end the war,” he wrote. “On the contrary, they are making movements that indicate preparations for new offensive operations.”

Leaders of 26 out of 27 EU member states said Tuesday that any agreement on Ukraine’s future must include Kyiv in the negotiations. Hungary declined to endorse the statement. The leaders stressed that viable talks should be tied to a cease-fire or reduction in hostilities, and reaffirmed that peace must respect international law, specifically Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the principle that borders cannot be altered by force.

While welcoming Trump’s diplomatic push, the EU leaders warned that the ongoing war threatens both European and global security.
