Ukraine PM steps down ahead sweeping govt reshuffle

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal on Tuesday announced he has submitted his resignation, paving the way for the country’s largest wartime cabinet shakeup since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Monday nominated First Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko to succeed Shmyhal. Svyrydenko, a long-time ally of Zelenskiy, is expected to be confirmed later this week when parliament votes on the nomination.

Shmyhal, who has led the government since March 2020, is expected to take over as Ukraine’s new defense minister, Zelenskiy said Monday.

The president posted a photo from his office meeting with Svyrydenko, saying they had already agreed on priority tasks for the next six months. “We are preparing the initial steps of the renewed government,” Zelenskiy wrote on Telegram.

Among her immediate goals, he said, will be boosting Ukraine’s domestic weapons production and carrying out reforms to unlock the country’s economic potential.

The overhaul comes as Russian forces press forward in eastern Ukraine, and hopes for a quick ceasefire remain remote. Ukraine’s economy, though supported by billions in Western aid, remains smaller than before the war despite businesses adjusting to wartime conditions.

Lawmakers said the parliamentary vote on the new government lineup is scheduled for Thursday.
