Tinubu Orders Review of Governing Councils List After ASUU’s Rejection

President Bola Tinubu has called for a thorough review of the recently announced governing boards of tertiary institutions before their planned inauguration and retreat. This move comes in response to the rejection of the list by bodies like the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP).

The list, which was released by the Ministry of Education, comprised names of technocrats, politicians, and traditional rulers for various federal tertiary institutions across the country. However, concerns were raised regarding the lack of adequate representation from certain states, prompting Tinubu to order a comprehensive review.

In a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, it was emphasized that Tinubu is committed to ensuring strict compliance with the principle of federal character as stipulated in the constitution. The review aims to address issues of national spread and ensure equitable representation from all parts of the country.

With the inauguration and retreat initially scheduled for May 31, the review process seeks to rectify any discrepancies and ensure the inclusivity and fairness of the governing councils. Tinubu’s directive underscores his dedication to responsive and representative governance in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
