Egypt reaffirmed their dominance of African table tennis after defending both the men’s and women’s team titles at the ITTF Africa Championships Tangier 2026 in Morocco on Tuesday, October 20.
The Egyptian women secured the championship with a commanding 3-0 victory over Tunisia in the final, while the men survived a tense encounter against Algeria to emerge victorious 3-2 at the Olympic Arena in Tangier.
The Egyptian women’s team, comprising Dina Meshref, Hana Goda, Mariam Alhodaby, Farida Badawy and Hend Fathy, delivered an outstanding performance throughout the competition.
They completed a flawless campaign, defeating every opponent 3-0 from the group stage to the final without dropping a match.
Their victory over Tunisia extended Egypt’s remarkable unbeaten run in the women’s team event, which reportedly dates back to the 2012 championships in Cairo.
The latest triumph also secured Egypt’s 10th consecutive title in the women’s team competition, further strengthening their position as Africa’s leading force in the sport.
Unlike the women, Egypt’s men faced a determined Algerian side in a closely contested final that went down to the decisive fifth match.
Egypt fielded Youssef Abdelaziz, Omar Assar and Mohamed El-Beiali, while Algeria relied on Stéphane Ouaiche, Maheidine Bella, and Sami Kherouf.
Algeria took the early advantage when Bella defeated Abdelaziz 3-2. However, Assar responded with a 3-0 victory over Ouaiche to level the tie.
El-Beiali then edged Kherouf 3-2 to put Egypt ahead before Ouaiche defeated Abdelaziz 3-1 to restore parity at 2-2.
The championship was subsequently decided by Assar and Bella in a gripping encounter.
The experienced Egyptian produced a composed performance under pressure, eventually winning the deciding game 17-15 to secure a 3-2 victory for Egypt.
The result completed Egypt’s double triumph in Tangier, reaffirming their status as the dominant force in African table tennis.
