The indefinite suspension of the much-anticipated student loan scheme by the federal government has stirred diverse reactions among Nigerians.
The Federal Government recently announced the postponement of the Nigerian Student Loan Scheme, which was eagerly awaited. The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, Akintunde Sawyer, cited the need for corrections before the scheme’s launch as the reason for the delay.
This development comes just 48 hours before the scheduled launch. Initially proposed in June 2023 by President Bola Tinubu, the scheme was intended to provide interest-free loans to Nigerians pursuing higher education. However, delays have plagued its implementation timeline, with previous launch dates being missed.
In response to the suspension, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) reiterated its call for free education, expressing skepticism about the effectiveness of the government’s loan program.
On social media platforms, Nigerians shared their mixed reactions to the news. Some expressed doubts about the scheme ever materializing, while others criticized the government’s handling of the situation, citing inconsistencies and delays.
