Sudan defeat, worst in my coaching career – Chelle

    Published on

Eric Chelle has described the CHAN Eagles match against Sudan on Tuesday as the worst game he has overseen as a coach.

The Super Eagles coach spoke after his CHAN Eagles side were pummeled 4–0 by Sudan in what is Nigeria’s joint heaviest defeat at the tournament. Chelle said the team has lost steam and there is no redemption.

“We have lost all ambition. The CHAN is over for us. We have a third match to play for our honour and respect. But I am disappointed by this match. It is the worst game I’ve overseen from the dugout as a coach,” he said.

His team became the first team in the tournament to concede four goals in a game, and they have gone 180 minutes without a goal and have only mustered a few shots on target. These disappointments, Chelle attributed to players who left the team for greener pastures abroad before the tournament.

“Though some important players left our preparation camp, these were the best players in our league. We can’t play a game like that and lose in the manner we did. We need to be more focused.

“Our training session before the game went well. We analysed Sudan’s team. We prepared well but were not ready for so many mistakes,” he concluded.

The team will now play their final game on Tuesday, 19th August 2025, in an inconsequential game.
