At least eight people have been killed and seventeen injured in a stabbing incident outside a school in the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi, according to local police.
Around 6:30 p.m. local time (10:30 GMT) on Saturday, the attack took place at the Wuxi Yixing Arts and Crafts Vocational and Technical College.
The attacker, a 21-year-old guy who had graduated from the school earlier this year, was taken into custody at the scene, according to police.
The statement claims that the suspect carried out the attack after becoming irate over his inability to receive a diploma as a result of subpar exam scores and his discontent with the compensation he received for his internship.
The suspect admitted to the stabbing “without hesitation,” according to the police.
The police added that they have opened a thorough investigation into the incident and are now attempting to control the fallout.
This stabbing comes after another horrific event in southern China earlier this week, in which a man allegedly drove his car into a crowd outside a stadium in Zhuhai, killing at least 35 people. The attack was reportedly motivated by a personal grievance involving a divorce settlement.
The two attacks have sparked worries about a growing trend of public violence in China. According to some social media commenters, the acts are part of a larger trend where people are “taking revenge on society” by attacking strangers out of personal resentment.
