Saudi Arabia’s ‘Sleeping Prince’ dies two decades after coma-inducing crash

Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid Al-Saud, widely known as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” has died at the age of 36, nearly 20 years after a car crash left him in a coma.

His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, confirmed the news in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

“With hearts believing in Allah’s will and decree, and with deep sorrow and sadness, we mourn our beloved son: Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. May Allah have mercy on him, who passed away today,” the statement read.

Prince Al-Waleed was just 15 years old and studying at a military college in London in 2005 when the accident occurred. He suffered a brain hemorrhage and internal injuries, and never regained full consciousness. He remained on a ventilator until his death.

His father became a vocal advocate for maintaining life support despite doctors’ recommendations to withdraw treatment as early as 2015. Occasional minor movements — such as finger twitches or head tilts — briefly raised hopes of recovery, but his condition did not improve.

Prince Al-Waleed was a great-grandson of Saudi Arabia’s founder, King Abdulaziz, and a nephew of billionaire businessman Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal. King Salman, the current monarch, is his great-uncle.

Funeral prayers for the prince were scheduled to be held Sunday at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque for men, with a separate service for women at King Faisal Specialist Hospital.
