The Rivers State government has confirmed two cases of Mpox, also known as Monkeypox, within the state. This update was provided by Dr. Adaeze Oreh, Commissioner for Health, during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on August 20, 2024.

Dr. Oreh stated that the state’s Public Health Emergency Operations Centre is on high alert to manage and contain any potential outbreaks. She noted that, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), there are currently 39 confirmed Mpox cases across Nigeria, with Rivers State reporting two of these cases.

In response to the situation, the state government has initiated an incident management plan and allocated resources to monitor and address all reported cases. The Ministry of Health has also recruited and trained temporary staff to enhance the state’s response capabilities.

“Our medical teams are prepared at both general and specialist hospitals to handle any emergencies that arise,” Dr. Oreh said. She also emphasized that ad hoc staff are now equipped to manage the infection across various healthcare levels.

Mpox primarily spreads through direct contact between individuals but can also be transmitted via contaminated objects and surfaces. The Rivers State government’s proactive measures aim to curb the spread of the virus and protect public health.
