Real reasons Nigerian football stars succeed in Europe more than South Africans – Jay-Jay Okocha

    Published on

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has shared insights into why Nigerian footballers tend to thrive in European leagues more than their South African counterparts.

Nigeria has a rich history of producing top footballers who compete successfully across elite European competitions.

From the English Premier League to La Liga, Bundesliga, French Ligue 1 and Serie A, Nigerian players consistently showcase their skills on major stages.

A notable example is Galatasaray striker, Victor Osimhen, who made waves at Lille and Napoli before joining the Turkish side.

Other prominent names include Atletico Madrid’s Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams from Sevilla.

In an interview on Thabisa Mosia’s Game On show on Radio 2000, as reported by Africa Soccer, Okocha said: “To truly excel, you must aspire to become the best version of yourself.

“South African players are too comfortable at home, and that drive is not really there.

“But, we Nigerians are very ambitious. We like to challenge ourselves.”

Okocha himself enjoyed a diverse playing career across Germany, Turkey, France, and England.
