The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has rescued a suspect from a mob over allegation to abduct a five-year child in front of her residence in Angwan Lado, Kuje Area Council.
In a statement on Tuesday, the command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said the incident occurred on Sunday at about 2:46 p.m., when an angry mob assaulted an unidentified adult over an alleged attempt to abduct a child.
She said following the report, police operatives from the Kuje Division were immediately dispatched to the scene, where one Bashir Usman was rescued from an irate mob about to lynch him.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was being assaulted by the mob over allegations that he attempted to abduct a five-year old child in front of her residence in Angwan Lado, Kuje Area Council of the FCT,” Ms Adeh said.
She stated that the suspect had been taken into protective custody, while investigations into the alleged crime were being expanded to unravel the extent of his activities and apprehend any accomplices who might be involved.
The FCT commissioner of police, Ahmed Sanusi strongly discouraged members of the public from taking the law into their own hands or engaging in jungle justice.
He stated that such acts were criminal and tantamount to murder, under the law.
