Pochettino Advises Chelsea’s Caicedo to Overcome Emotional Struggles

Chelsea’s manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is urging midfielder Moises Caicedo to free his mind and overcome emotional challenges as the young Ecuadorian strives to find his form with the Blues. Pochettino made a significant investment of £115 million to acquire Caicedo from Brighton in August, but the midfielder’s emotional nature and international commitments have posed challenges for his adaptation.

Caicedo, 22, has been frequently jetting off on 11,000-mile round trips to South America to represent Ecuador, limiting his time with Pochettino and the coaching staff at Chelsea. Despite becoming a regular fixture in the team after recovering from a difficult debut marked by a red card against West Ham, Caicedo has yet to replicate the stellar performances he displayed at Brighton.

In a recent interview with Chelsea’s website, Caicedo opened up about struggling with homesickness during his initial days in England after joining Brighton from Ecuador’s Independiente del Valle in 2021. The emotional midfielder eventually played a pivotal role in Brighton’s Premier League ascent, attracting interest from top clubs.

Pochettino, acknowledging Caicedo’s emotional nature, emphasized the need for patience and understanding in his development. The manager cited the challenges of international travels and the toll it takes on a player’s physical and mental state.

“When we signed him, we knew what was going to happen. He’s an emotional guy, an emotional player that needs time to recover,” Pochettino explained. “It didn’t help also the international games, traveling to Ecuador, to South America. That is really tough every single month, two or three weeks then go 10, 12 days away, then come back sometimes with some injury.”

Pochettino took a proactive step to assist Caicedo in settling at Chelsea, engaging in a one-on-one meeting with the midfielder. The manager, who shares a common language with Caicedo, stressed the importance of mental clarity and calmness, especially in the challenging environment of a struggling Chelsea amidst Ecuador’s busy World Cup qualifying schedule.

“We had no pre-season with him. We talk about footballers; it is physical and mental, and there is the talent. If you want to express your talent, you need to be clear in your mind and be good in your legs. Otherwise, it is not possible to move,” Pochettino concluded.

As Caicedo navigates through the intricacies of life at Chelsea, Pochettino’s guidance and understanding may prove crucial in unlocking the midfielder’s full potential on the field.
