Plateau: Arrest Fulani man celebrating killings on Facebook, youths charge security agencies

    Published on

Plateau youths, under the aegis of Concerned Plateau Youths, COY, has called on security agencies to track and arrest a Fulani man identified as Umar Auwal Bakwankwashe, after he took to Facebook to celebrate the killing of seven people in Kwi community of Riyom LGA.

Media reports had described how heavily armed gunmen suspected to be Fulani militants invaded the Kwi on Saturday night and killed about seven people while leaving several others injured and properties destroyed.

Residents of the community said the Fulani bandits, numbering over 50 and carrying sophisticated weapons, invaded the village at about 10:30 pm and began shooting sporadically after overpowering the local vigilante group.

“Immediately the youths escaped, the Fulani gunmen began shooting sporadically, throwing the people into utter confusion, with many managing to escape into nearby bushes and rocks for safety.

“They killed seven people and injured several others. Some people made frantic calls to security operatives but there was no response from them,” a resident said.

But while the community and the state were still grieving over the sad incident, Bakwankwashe, on Sunday, took to his Facebook page to rejoice over the attack and killing of the victims.

In the post, Bakwankwashe, who also posted a screenshot of a headline about the killing, wrote, “I no tell una? Gradually we go finish you.”

With the post going viral, garnering thousands of comments both in support and against, some wondered why he had not been arrested by security operatives for questioning.

The youths have now issued a petition, demanding Bakwankwashe’s immediate arrest and prosecution.

In the petition addressed to security agencies, the state, and the federal government, the group said: “We are calling on the federal government of Nigeria and the Plateau State government to arrest this young man named Umar Auwal Bakwankwashe for his comments on a post saying Muslims will finish and keep killing Christians in Plateau State.

“This further shows that there are some of our Muslim brothers who are supporters of these terrorist attacks on innocent Nigerians.

“We are calling on the Nigerian Police, DSS, and the Nigerian Army to bring him in for questioning because he appears to know a lot about the attacks on innocent villagers in Nigeria
