Talent manager Paulo Okoye has raised concerns about the current state of Afrobeats, indicating that many artists in the genre are struggling to achieve the same level of success they experienced just three years ago. In a recent Instagram post, Okoye highlighted a significant decline in both global and local popularity for Afrobeats, particularly in Nigeria.
Okoye expressed that while the outlook appears bleak, he remains hopeful for the genre’s future. He believes that the brightest stars of Afrobeats will continue to gain international recognition despite the challenges.
He stated, “Afrobeats is going through a lot lately! Every Afrobeat artist was doing way better three years ago compared to today! Only a few are making money at the moment, and that’s a fact! I can count on one hand the Afrobeat artists who are making money now!”
He emphasized that the situation is dire, saying, “Globally, things are falling apart for Afrobeats. Locally, it’s even worse: no money anywhere. Our bright stars will continue to shine, and the world will continue to recognize our greatness.”
Despite the difficulties faced by the genre, Okoye remains optimistic about its potential for resurgence in the future.
