Panic as Kaduna–Abuja Train Derails, Passengers in Grief

    Published on

A passenger train on the Kaduna–Abuja rail corridor derailed on Tuesday morning, causing several coaches to overturn and sending passengers into panic.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described the incident as chaotic, with commuters seen scrambling for safety in the aftermath. The number of casualties, if any, remains unknown as emergency responders have yet to confirm the extent of injuries.

The cause of the derailment has not been officially established. However, the incident adds to growing concerns over safety on the Kaduna–Abuja railway, which has faced multiple security and operational challenges in recent years—including the March 2022 deadly terrorist attack.

Sources from Kaduna Political Affairs noted that the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) is yet to issue a formal statement as of the time of filing this report.

This latest incident comes barely a week after a reported fault on the same route. The NRC had then confirmed that a coach experienced a hot axle near Rigasa Station in Kaduna, leading to a brief disruption in services. Although managed without injuries, the corporation acknowledged service capacity challenges, particularly in business class, and apologized for the inconvenience.

Passengers and concerned citizens are anxiously awaiting an official explanation and reassurance from authorities on the safety of rail travel along the route.
