Transport union leaders in Ogun State have vowed to collaborate with the state government to curb arbitrary increases in transportation fares following the recent spike in fuel pump prices. This commitment was made after a meeting between Governor Dapo Abiodun and union representatives on Monday, where the need to maintain reasonable transport fares within the state was discussed.

Akeem Bodunrin, Chairman of the Ogun State Park Management Scheme, assured journalists at the Panseke Motor Park in Abeokuta that the unions would support the governor’s efforts to protect citizens from excessive transport costs. He emphasized that the unions have not raised the cost of union tickets to alleviate financial pressure on their members and expressed hope that fuel costs would eventually decrease with the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and electric bikes.

“We have discussed with our drivers and union members how best to maintain humane transport fares, and we have noted that the fare increases are minimal,” Bodunrin stated. He added that the unions are committed to working with the state government to ensure that life remains manageable for the people of Ogun State despite the economic challenges.

Mustapha Ismail, the state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), echoed these sentiments, urging Ogun residents to remain patient with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He reassured passengers that the union would continue to prioritize their welfare.

The unions’ pledge to maintain stable transport fares is seen as a significant step towards easing the financial burden on Ogun State residents amid rising fuel prices.
