‎The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, has said that no fewer than 161 persons died in 415 road crashes across the state between January and May 2026.

‎The command’s spokesperson, Mr Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Ota, Ogun State.

‎Odunsi said that within the period under review, 1,007 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crashes.

‎He also said that, compared with the 494 road traffic crashes recorded during the corresponding period in 2025, the 415 crashes recorded in 2026 represented a decrease of 79.

‎He further said the number of deaths declined from 212 in the corresponding period of 2025 to 161 in 2026.

‎According to him, the number of injured persons also decreased from 1,121 in 2025 to 1,007 in 2026.

‎“This feat couldn’t have been achieved without the intensive public enlightenment campaign by FRSC personnel, educating the public on road safety measures,” he said.

‎Odunsi, however, attributed most of the road crashes to violations of traffic rules and regulations, including speeding, drunk driving, dangerous overtaking, use of mobile phones while driving, overloading and tyre bursts, among others.

‎“We are appealing to motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations in order to prevent unnecessary loss of lives through road crashes,” he said.

‎He reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property through stricter enforcement of traffic rules and sustained public sensitisation.
