The Labour Party (LP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently rein in governors of his party, warning that their actions could derail Nigeria’s democracy.
The party was reacting to the blockade of its former presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, in Benue State, which it described as shameful and dangerous.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, on Thursday, LP alleged that the miscreants who blocked Obi were sponsored by the Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia.
The party said if it is true that Alia, a Reverend Father and minister of God, sponsored the attack, the situation becomes more frightening.
“If a Reverend Father who mounts the pulpit to teach morals could descend to this level of violence, what should Nigerians expect from more indecorous politicians and governors, like the one in Edo?” the statement queried.
LP said the Constitution guarantees freedom of movement for every Nigerian, irrespective of tribe, religion or political leaning, and must be allowed to stand.
It expressed concern that a governor, who as Chief Security Officer (CSO) has failed to arrest and prosecute criminals ravaging Benue State could instead target a man on a humanitarian mission.
The party warned that political differences should never become a licence for violence, intimidation or suppression of fundamental rights.
“The sanctity of our democracy depends on the ability of every citizen to move freely, express political opinions and participate in public life without fear of harassment or attack,” it said.
The party vowed to continue condemning attempts to weaponise state power against opponents, insisting it stands for democracy, constitutional rights and the rule of law.
