North can’t reap where it didn’t sow, Imirhobo supports Tinubu’s tax reform bill

Malcolm Imirhobo, a well-known Nigerian attorney, has supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bill.

On Friday night, the attorney released a message via his official X account outlining his position.

His remarks coincide with the ongoing controversy surrounding the recently submitted Tax Reform Bill to the National Assembly.

The National Economic Council, which is made up of governors, requested that Tinubu revoke the measure while it called for additional consultations.

Governors in the North opposed the bill at the same time.

But Tinubu’s administration disregarded the Northern governors’ position on the bill and disregarded the NEC’s recommendations.

The President believes that the National Assembly should give the bill careful attention, and that any required revisions or additions can be made at the public hearing of   the bill.

Imirhobo responded in a statement by saying he is in favor of the tax reform measure since it will address disparities in tax distribution.

He claims that for decades, Northern Nigerians have been plundering the South.

He stated that the North cannot continue to reap where it did not sow and that each state in Nigeria should give their share of the nation’s income.

Imirhobo went on to say that if the nation is serious about switching back to a regional administration, the tax reform measure is a must.

Since the tax reform law will address disparities in tax distribution, I am in favor of it. The North must cease its decades-long rape and robbery of the South.

Tax reform is essential to the advancement of this nation if we truly wish to return to regional governance.

“The North cannot keep reaping where it did not sow; each state must contribute something,” he stated.

Recall that Taiwo Oyedele, the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, stated four days ago that the law will create a more equitable tax structure for the nation.

Tinubu forwarded the tax reform bills to Nigeria’s National Assembly for review in October 2024.
