The Nordic ambassadors in Nigeria have underscored the need for international collaboration to tackle food security challenges. At a recent Nordic food feast hosted by Finnish Ambassador Sanna Selin, representatives from Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Norway highlighted their commitment to addressing global food security issues through partnerships with Nigeria.

Danish Ambassador Jens Hansen emphasized the necessity of innovative solutions and collaboration between Nordic countries and Nigeria. He stated, “Our planet is already struggling. Therefore, we need to find new ways to sustainably increase food production while balancing its effects on the environment. To handle that challenge, we need cooperation between Nordic and African countries. We need to exchange knowledge, technology, and innovative solutions.”

Hansen also mentioned that Denmark and Nigeria have agreed to establish strategic sector cooperation to support the Nigerian food and livestock systems.

Finnish Ambassador Sanna Selin highlighted the Nordic region’s dedication to environmental sustainability and animal welfare. She pointed out that Nordic countries have a low use of antibiotics in farming and are pioneering innovations like plant-based meat alternatives. “In Nordic countries, environmental issues and animal welfare are our primary focus areas. The quantity of antibiotics administered to farm animals is among the lowest in Europe,” Selin noted.

Selin expressed hope that more Finnish products would soon enter the Nigerian market, further strengthening the partnership between the two regions.

Swedish Ambassador Annika Hahn-Englund discussed the historical ties between the Nordic countries and Africa, emphasizing Nigeria’s role as a key partner. She mentioned a recent visit by Nordic foreign ministers to Nigeria, which aimed at enhancing collaboration on global issues such as green transitions and food security. Hahn-Englund highlighted the paradox of Nigeria’s fertile land juxtaposed with significant food insecurity, urging investment in climate-smart agriculture and infrastructure.

“Despite Nigeria’s vast land, many people lack access to nutritious food. Nigeria imports most of its food, making it vulnerable to global shocks. Nordic companies invest in climate-smart agriculture, sustainable energy, infrastructure, and rural connectivity, contributing to market prosperity and supporting food security in emergencies,” she said.

Norwegian Ambassador Svein Baera stressed the importance of gender equality and constructive international dialogue for development and prosperity. He added, “The Nordic vision is to be the most sustainable and integrated region in the world.”

The Nordic countries’ engagement in Nigeria reflects their broader goals of fostering peaceful societies, democratic development, and inclusive growth.
