Lieutenant Commander Gideon Gwaza, the Base Operations Officer of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base in Bonny, was laid to rest at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja after losing his life in a heroic rescue mission in Rivers State. On July 30, 2024, Gwaza led an operation that saved 59 individuals from a sinking dredging vessel, MV AMBIKA 4, near the Okpobo River.
During the funeral, Captain M.A. Mohammed, Commanding Officer in Bonny, praised Gwaza’s bravery and commitment. “Gwaza knew the operation was risky but went ahead to rescue the victims. His courage was evident in numerous other operations,” Mohammed remarked, recalling how Gwaza had also saved two individuals in Bonny under challenging circumstances. “His selflessness and dedication were unparalleled. He was not just a hero to the Navy, but to the entire nation.”
Gwaza’s wife, Salome, expressed pride in her husband’s sacrifice. “We had nine years of the deepest love and true partnership. You were my number one role model, and I’m glad you died as a hero. I will forever be proud of you, and your children will always remember your bravery,” she said.
His sister, Ishaku Matilda, shared memories of Gwaza’s strength and leadership, noting, “You exuded greatness in everything you did. Even though you’re no longer here in the flesh, I carry you in my heart and spirit always.”
The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, described Gwaza’s passing as a profound loss to the Nigerian Navy and the armed forces. “He was a born soldier, excelling in every assignment and training. Gwaza died in service, not only to the Navy but to humanity. His mission was to rescue 59 people from a vessel on the brink of sinking. Sadly, he had an accident and we lost him that day. It’s very sad,” Ogalla lamented.
Gwaza’s heroic actions and his ultimate sacrifice reflect his dedication to his duty and the safety of others, leaving a legacy that will be remembered by his family, colleagues, and the nation.
