The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) has expressed a desire to deepen strategic collaboration with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) in a significant stride towards enhancing public awareness on electrical safety and enforcement of technical standards and regulations compliance.

For this very reason, NEMSA’s Managing Director and Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, Engr. Aliyu Tukur Tahir, paid a courtesy visit to the Director-General of FRCN, Dr. Mohammed B. Bulama, at the FRCN office in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by the NEMSA’s Head of Communications & Protocol, Ama Umoren, Tahir’s visit was to seek to strengthen the agency’s existing partnership with Radio Nigeria while advocating for broader public sensitisation on the safe use of electricity.

“During the meeting, Tahir commended the long-standing support NEMSA has received through Radio Nigeria’s platforms, especially the agency’s flagship awareness program, Service and Safety Half Hour, which has been running successfully for eight years. He expressed appreciation for the visibility this collaboration has brought to NEMSA’s mandate, including enforcement of technical standards, certification of meters and installations, as well as protection of lives and property in Nigeria’s electricity sector.

“While outlining the agency’s achievements, such as the modernization of inherited assets, establishment of new field offices and meter testing laboratories, and attainment of ISO certifications, Tahir emphasised the need for deeper collaboration. He specifically appealed for the Service and Safety Half Hour program’s duration to be extended from 30 minutes to one hour, adding that the feedback from listeners revealed the need for more time to allow for deeper engagement and public participation.

“In his response, the Director-General of FRCN, Dr. Mohammed B. Bulama, acknowledged the critical role NEMSA plays in ensuring the safety and integrity of Nigeria’s power systems, and expressed Radio Nigeria’s willingness to strengthen its collaboration with NEMSA. He noted that as a media organisation reliant on stable electricity, Radio Nigeria is directly impacted by the quality of electrical installations and infrastructure. He pledged stronger support for NEMSA’s mission, and proposed a joint committee to explore expanded collaborations, including training, local language programming, and outreach across FRCN’s 45 FM stations nationwide.

“The meeting concluded with renewed commitment from both agencies to work together in building a more safety-conscious public, while ensuring improved quality and accountability in Nigeria’s power sector,” the statement read.
