The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has received a Certificate of Observership from the Association of African Higher Education Financing Agencies (AAHEFA), following its participation in the Association’s 6th International Conference and Annual General Meeting held on Thursday, September 17, 2026 in Accra, Ghana.
The recognition marks another step in NELFUND’s growing engagement with higher education financing institutions across Africa and underscores the Fund’s increasing participation in continental conversations around sustainable, inclusive and technology-driven student financing.
The conference, themed “Digital Transformation in Higher Education Financing: The Role of Technology Advancements in Ensuring Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient Higher Education Financing Systems in Africa,” brought together representatives of higher education financing agencies and other key stakeholders from across the continent.
The gathering provided a platform for participating institutions to exchange knowledge, share experiences and examine innovative approaches to strengthening higher education financing systems through technology and digital transformation.
Representing NELFUND at the countries’ presentations during the third day of the conference’s Annual General Meeting were Ms. Monalisa Dike and Ms. Stephanie Abughdyer.
The AGM provided an important platform for participating countries to deliberate on emerging issues affecting higher education financing, particularly the need to build systems that are financially sustainable, inclusive and resilient.
With representatives from 18 African countries in attendance, the meeting facilitated the exchange of institutional experiences, policy perspectives, technological innovations and practical strategies for improving student financing across the continent.
NELFUND’s active participation in the discussions further strengthened its visibility within the African higher education financing community and contributed to the Fund’s formal recognition through the presentation of the Certificate of Observership by AAHEFA.
The Certificate was presented to NELFUND’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, who received the recognition with delight on Monday, September 21, 2026 in Abuja.
Sawyerr described the honour as a significant milestone for NELFUND, noting that the recognition would further enhance the Fund’s visibility and recognition both within Africa and on the global stage.
He also commended Ms. Monalisa Dike for her commitment to advancing NELFUND’s engagement and representation within the AAHEFA platform.
According to him, participation in continental platforms such as AAHEFA provides NELFUND with valuable opportunities to learn from peer institutions while contributing its own experiences to the development of sustainable higher education financing systems across Africa.
The recognition comes at a time when higher education financing agencies across Africa are increasingly exploring technology, data and digital platforms as tools for improving access, efficiency, transparency and sustainability in student financing.
For NELFUND, participation in the AAHEFA conference reinforces its commitment to continuous learning, institutional collaboration and knowledge exchange with its African counterparts.
The Fund’s engagement also reflects its broader focus on leveraging technology, data, digital transformation and strategic partnerships to expand access to higher education financing for Nigerian students.
NELFUND’s observership recognition therefore represents not only acknowledgement of its participation in the continental forum, but also an opportunity for deeper collaboration and knowledge-sharing with higher education financing institutions across Africa.
As African countries continue to confront the challenge of financing expanding access to tertiary education, platforms such as AAHEFA provide opportunities for institutions to share practical solutions and develop financing models capable of responding to changing economic, technological and educational realities.
NELFUND’s participation in the Accra conference further positions the Fund within this continental conversation as it continues its efforts to build a more inclusive, sustainable, transparent and resilient education financing ecosystem for Nigerian students and contribute to the broader development of higher education financing across Africa.
