    NDLEA Launches Nationwide Crackdown on Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) Abuse

    Following concerns raised by a Nigerian doctor regarding the use of nitrous oxide (commonly known as laughing gas) for recreational purposes, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), has instructed all commands and formations of the agency to initiate an immediate clampdown on the illegal sale and use of nitrous oxide.

    Nitrous oxide is typically used by medical professionals, such as dentists, for sedation and pain relief during minor medical procedures. However, it has gained popularity among young party-goers and fun-seekers in Nigeria as a means to feel intoxicated or high. The gas is often transferred from its containers into balloons, which are then inhaled for the euphoric effects.

    The NDLEA has highlighted the potential dangers associated with the abuse of nitrous oxide, including dizziness, disorientation, headaches, fainting spells, hallucinations, unconsciousness, suffocation from lack of oxygen, and other neurological complications, particularly psychiatric symptoms.

    In the statement released by the NDLEA spokesperson, it was emphasized that the agency will take decisive action against those involved in the illegal sale and use of nitrous oxide. The NDLEA also called on parents, guardians, and stakeholders to be vigilant and warn young individuals about the risks associated with experimenting or abusing this substance, which poses threats to their mental and overall well-being.

    The NDLEA aims to curb the misuse of nitrous oxide in collaboration with other stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Health, to protect public health and ensure the well-being of the Nigerian population.
