The Statistician General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, has reaffirmed the bureau’s dedication to advancing the field of statistics and establishing a well-coordinated and resourced statistical system in Nigeria. This commitment was expressed during the 2nd Bi-Annual Meeting of the National Consultative Committee on Statistics (NCCS) held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on December 5th and 6th, 2023.
Prince Adeyemi Adeniran emphasized the significance of data accessibility and dissemination at the sub-national level, highlighting the need for accurate, timely, and accessible data to empower decision-makers at all levels of government. He recognized the rapidly evolving world with its unique challenges and opportunities, emphasizing the importance of providing sub-national entities with the necessary tools and information to make informed decisions tailored to their specific contexts.
The meeting’s theme, “Data Accessibility and Dissemination at the Sub-national Level,” resonated with Nigeria’s diverse and dynamic nature. Prince Adeyemi Adeniran stressed the need to enhance data collection processes, reconsider procedures, adopt new technologies, and embrace innovative methodologies to capture a wide range of statistical insights that accurately reflect the nation’s realities. This commitment stems from recent stakeholder engagements in the development of the third phase of the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS).
To facilitate seamless data exchange, sharing, and dissemination, the NBS is currently establishing a Data Innovation Laboratory. The initiative aims to ensure that data is not only available but also easily comprehensible and usable by stakeholders. It is part of a broader set of activities outlined in the new NSDS that focuses on strengthening collaborations for comprehensive data production, empowering local expertise through capacity building, and adopting innovative approaches to data accessibility. Collaboration with state and local governments, training programs for state statistical agencies, and investment in user-friendly platforms and visualizations are among the strategies being implemented.
Prince Adeyemi Adeniran stressed the importance of data literacy at all levels of society, emphasizing the goal of empowering every Nigerian with the knowledge and tools needed to actively participate in the development process. He expressed confidence that the collective expertise and discussions during the NCCS meeting would drive positive changes in the months and years to come.
The meeting concluded with a strong emphasis on the transformative impact that accessible data at the sub-national level could have on the lives of ordinary Nigerians. By providing leaders, policymakers, and citizens with accurate and readily available data, the nation can work towards a more prosperous and equitable future.
The commitment demonstrated by Prince Adeyemi Adeniran and the NBS reflects the government’s recognition of the value of data and its dedication to developing the data landscape in Nigeria. The meeting aimed to foster an environment conducive to open and constructive discussions, allowing ideas to flourish and partnerships to strengthen. The ultimate goal is to usher in a new era of data accessibility, accountability, and progress for the country.
