Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has demanded a full reconciliation of Nigeria’s public debt as the nation’s debt stock hit N166.79 trillion.
Atiku also demanded an apology from the Bola Tinubu administration over the hardship caused by subsidy removal and other reforms introduced in 2023.
His demands were contained in a statement on Saturday by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communications of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council.
The statement followed latest figures from the Debt Management Office (DMO) which put total public debt at N166.79 trillion as of June 30, 2026.
The DMO published the data on September 25, stating that the figure comprises N91.59 trillion domestic debt and N75.20 trillion external debt, converted at N1,379.18 to the dollar.
Atiku contrasted it with the N49.85 trillion public debt recorded in March 2023 before Tinubu assumed office.
He called for a breakdown of how much was inherited, how much was due to naira depreciation on foreign debt, and how much was fresh borrowing since May 2023.
The former Vice President also queried new borrowings, Treasury Bills and controversial charges in recent external debt-service records.
He said Nigerians deserve transparency on the debt build-up and accountability for the economic pain that followed the reforms.
