Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has revealed plans to reinstate a monthly sanitation initiative as a key strategy to maintain the city’s cleanliness.
Wike announced this development in Abuja on Monday, following a private meeting with contractors responsible for various projects in the FCT.
He detailed that he had already discussed the concept with President Bola Tinubu, proposing that at least two Saturdays per month be designated for sanitation activities from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
This arrangement is intended to facilitate the efforts of companies providing logistical support to the FCT in collecting and disposing of waste from markets and public areas.
Wike emphasized that achieving a clean Abuja requires collective effort. He stressed the need for everyone’s cooperation and willingness to make small sacrifices, stating that contributing a mere three hours on a Saturday to clear refuse from homes can significantly aid the sanitation cause.
He appealed to residents to actively cooperate with the sanitation initiative in order to attain their shared goal of a cleaner environment.
Wike also noted that there have been positive advancements in the installation of streetlights throughout the city. He assured the public that while complete illumination is still a work in progress, efforts are underway to ensure that all areas of Abuja are adequately lit.
