Military issues fresh warning to criminals behind Benue violence

    Published on

The Force Commander of the Joint Task Force, Major General Moses Gara, has cautioned individuals driving unrest in the Benue Valley to abandon their activities or be prepared to face severe repercussions.

He reiterated the resolve of “Operation WHIRL STROKE” to put an end to the persistent killing of innocent residents and incidents of cattle rustling across the state.

Gara denounced the continued acts of violence and criminal behaviour, stressing that those responsible would be tracked down and made to answer for their actions.

The warning followed the prompt intervention of troops in response to two separate security incidents in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

In one of the operations, soldiers rescued a wounded herder and apprehended suspects connected to cattle theft.

A statement issued by the Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters JTF Operation WHIRL STROKE, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, disclosed that on February 15, 2026, troops received reports that two herders were attacked at Amua Village, situated within the stretch of land between Daudu and Umenger/Ukpiam in Guma LGA.

According to him, personnel stationed at Umenger swiftly moved to the location and confirmed that one of the herders lost his life in the attack, while the other sustained gunshot injuries.

He explained that the injured victim was promptly taken to Keana in neighbouring Nasarawa State to receive urgent medical attention.

The statement added that the body of the deceased was later handed over to community representatives for burial in line with traditional rites.
