The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has affirmed that the military has the presidential mandate to ensure a free, fair, and credible governorship election in Edo State. Addressing stakeholders and troops in Benin on Wednesday, Musa outlined the military’s role and commitment to the electoral process.

Gen. Musa emphasized the military’s professional approach to the upcoming election, scheduled for Saturday, and assured the electorate that there would be no tolerance for violence or intimidation. He stated, “What I bring from Abuja is peace and assurance that we will act professionally during the election.”

The Chief of Defence Staff warned against the presence of unauthorized individuals carrying arms, stating that only statutory security agencies would be allowed to carry weapons during the election. He also instructed local security networks and vigilante groups to refrain from participating in election duties, underscoring that they are not part of the statutory agencies responsible for the election.

Musa stressed that any attempt to disrupt the election would be met with consequences and reiterated the military’s role in supporting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the police to ensure a peaceful voting environment. “We must provide an enabling environment for the electorate to cast their votes,” he said.

The general praised the troops for their readiness and dedication, urging them to work collaboratively with other security forces, including the police, civil defense, and the DSS. He assured them that their welfare and allowances would be addressed.

“We want this election to be the most peaceful. That is the mandate from Mr. President,” Musa concluded, emphasizing that the election must reflect the will of the people of Edo State.
