Dr. Sa’eid Ahmad, the Chairman of the Medical Guild, has unveiled the shocking findings of an investigative panel concerning the tragic death of Dr. Diaso Vwaere, who lost her life in a malfunctioned elevator incident. The investigation revealed that the elevator responsible for the fatal accident was installed by a contractor who lacked the necessary certification for elevator system installation.

Addressing the media during a news conference, Dr. Ahmad provided an update on the probe into the circumstances surrounding Dr. Vwaere’s death, which occurred in June 2021 during the elevator’s inauguration. The contractor had attributed the elevator’s failure to inadequate power supply from the generator used during the event.

It came to light that regular maintenance of the elevator was essential for its optimal performance, but sadly, such maintenance was neglected.

Dr. Ahmad expressed strong sentiments that the contractor, installers, and all individuals involved in the substandard installation must be held accountable and face legal consequences for their negligence.

In addition to the elevator tragedy, Dr. Ahmad highlighted the series of infrastructural challenges that have plagued the house officers’ quarters of the General Hospital in Odan, Lagos, since its rehabilitation from 2015 to 2016. He appealed to the state government to take urgent action by installing a new elevator in the building, ensuring that a certified installer is entrusted with the task, and implementing regular maintenance protocols.

Following the tragic incident, Dr. Vwaere’s colleagues organized a peaceful protest at the hospital. The Nigerian Medical Association responded by directing medical doctors in three government hospitals on Lagos Island to commence an indefinite strike, demanding justice for the untimely demise of Dr. Vwaere.

Dr. Ahmad stressed the importance of preserving Dr. Vwaere’s memory and providing unwavering support to her grieving family. The Medical Guild remains fully committed to pursuing the investigation diligently to ensure that justice is served for the loss of their esteemed colleague and friend.
