Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Benue State branch is set to initiate a 3-day warning strike from Tuesday to Friday as a response to the abduction of one of its members, Dr. Asema Msuega. Dr. Ushakuma Anenga, the Chairman of the Association, announced this decision after discussions regarding Dr. Asema’s abduction. The incident occurred while he was on his way to supervise a state malaria initiative at the Primary Health Center in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State. Dr. Asema had been the sole medical doctor at General Hospital Sankera and had dedicated many years to serving the community.

During the strike, medical doctors and various health and educational facilities across the state will participate, except for private hospitals and clinics, which will remain open for compassionate reasons. Additionally, medical doctors working in Ukum Local Government Area have been instructed to vacate the area temporarily. The NMA also plans to organize a substantial protest on Thursday, starting at 9:00 am, which will begin at the government house roundabout and culminate at the government house gate. This demonstration aims to amplify the collective voice and demands of members, urging for the swift release of Dr. Asema. The Association calls upon government officials, including the Benue State leadership and other stakeholders, to intervene and secure the doctor’s release. The NMA emphasizes its commitment to persistently advocate until their demand for Dr. Asema’s release is met.
