In a bid to bolster security ahead of the planned relocation of Apo mechanics and artisans, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved the contract for the construction of a new Divisional Police Station at the Wasa Informal Sector.
The decision was finalised on Tuesday during the 19th FCT Executive Council (EXCO) meeting, following a memo presented for the immediate provision of security infrastructure in the area.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Director of the FCTA Security Services Department, Adamu Gwari, revealed that the project is a fresh contract with a strict six-month delivery timeline.
According to Gwari, the move fulfils a directive previously issued by the Minister during the commissioning of the site’s initial infrastructure in July, where security concerns were raised regarding the upcoming influx of artisans and business activities.
”The Minister directed that there should be a police station that will provide security not only for the sector, but for the entire area.
”This contract is a fresh contract which has been duly approved by the EXCO with a duration of a six-month delivery period,” Gwari stated.
Gwari noted that the project forms part of Minister Wike’s broader security initiative launched in December, which aims to bring policing closer to rural and developing communities across the FCT to combat crime.
Under this initiative, the administration pledged to build two divisional police offices in each of the six area councils.
Updating newsmen on the progress of the wider initiative, Gwari disclosed that construction across various sites is at an advanced stage, with the FCTA Department of Public Building already taking delivery of two fully completed and furnished stations.
”At the moment, Public Building has taken delivery of two fully completed police divisions: the one at Ushafa and the other one at Saburi,” he said, adding that each facility features a fully furnished divisional police station and an equally furnished six-man staff quarters.
He assured residents that the administration remains committed to taking security directly to their doorsteps, hinting that the Minister is expected to conduct inspection visits to some of the newly completed facilities in the coming days.
