The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed a deadly gas explosion at a fast-food restaurant in the Ajah area that left one dead and 13 others seriously injured.
The incident occurred at about 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, at No. 5 Spring Garden Estate, Orchid Road, Ajah. Police investigations revealed that the explosion was triggered by a suspected gas leak, which caused a powerful blast that engulfed the eatery in flames.
The restaurant, reportedly owned by Uchechukwu Godwill Villason, was in operation when the explosion occurred. Thirteen employees were trapped inside and sustained varying degrees of burns. They were quickly rushed to Gbagada General Hospital for urgent medical care.
One of the injured, 20-year-old Kingsley Promise from Akwa Ibom State, later succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.
Police detectives visited the scene of the explosion to gather evidence and assess the extent of damage. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Mainland General Hospital mortuary in Yaba for an autopsy.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Lagos Police Command has launched a full investigation into the cause of the explosion. Authorities are also advising businesses using gas-powered equipment to adopt stricter safety protocols and conduct routine maintenance to prevent similar incidents.
