The Labour Party has picked former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, as its candidate for the Nasarawa North Senatorial District ahead of the June 20 by-elections.
Primaries were conducted on Monday in line with the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to fill vacant senatorial, federal and state constituency seats nationwide.
According to the party, Maku emerged through a consensus arrangement during the primary held at the LP zonal office in Nasarawa North.
Party faithful turned out in large numbers to endorse his candidature for the forthcoming poll.
Similarly, seasoned diplomat, Simon Ejike Eze, emerged as the LP candidate for Enugu North Senatorial District.
The party described his selection as a peaceful and rancour-free consensus process.
In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, the party said members across Enugu North turned out in large numbers to affirm Eze’s candidature.
Other candidates who emerged through consensus include Engr. Sam Kinanee for Rivers South-East Senatorial District.
Barrister Ige Aiyeobasan Asemudara was picked for Ondo South Senatorial District.
Abubakar Yahaya Muhammad will fly the LP flag for Dawaki Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in Kano State.
Muhammad Aliyu Galadima emerged as candidate for the Zuru State Constituency by-election in Kebbi State.
The party recalled that the Enugu North, Nasarawa North and Rivers South-East Senatorial seats became vacant following the death of the senators representing the districts in the 10th Senate.
The Ondo South seat became vacant after the resignation of former senator, Jimoh Ibrahim.
LP said Senator Okey Ezea died in a Lagos hospital on November 18, 2025 at age 62 after a brief illness.
It described Ezea as the only office holder in Enugu State elected on the LP platform who remained loyal despite last year’s wave of defections.
Senator Godiya Akwashiki died on December 31, 2025 at age 52 after a prolonged illness while Senator Barinada Mpigi passed away on February 18, 2026 at age 64.
The party commended INEC for professionalism and diligence in monitoring the primaries across all affected constituencies.
“The Labour Party commends INEC for its professionalism and diligence in monitoring the primaries, which were conducted peacefully, transparently and successfully across the affected constituencies,” the statement read.
It also congratulated all successful candidates and urged members and supporters to rally behind them ahead of the by-elections.
“The Labour Party reiterates that, as a party founded on the principles of social democracy, equal opportunity and social justice, it carefully selected candidates with proven competence, integrity and commitment to the ideals of the party,” the statement added.
INEC has fixed Saturday, June 20, for the nationwide by-elections to fill vacant seats in the National and State Assemblies.
