The Labour Party stands firm on its decision to proceed with its national convention scheduled for Wednesday, despite facing opposition from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Following the party’s formal petition to relevant government bodies seeking intervention against alleged aggression from the NLC, the Labour Party reiterated its stance through four separate letters addressed to key officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Attorney General of the Federation.

The party called for disciplinary action against NLC President Joe Ajaero and other union leaders involved in the alleged vandalization of LP properties during recent protests.

Tensions escalated last week when NLC members, acting on directives from their leadership, picketed LP offices nationwide, demanding the resignation of LP’s chairman, Abure. Despite their efforts, they were prevented from accessing the LP national headquarters in Abuja by security personnel.

In response to the situation, LP accused union members of breaking into their offices, damaging property, and stealing staff salaries.

Efforts to mediate between the two parties, reportedly led by LP’s Presidential Candidate Peter Obi, seemed unsuccessful as LP insisted on proceeding with the convention in Umuahia, Abia State’s capital.

The LP National Publicity Secretary affirmed the convention’s continuation, dismissing rumors of its cancellation. He emphasized that delegates would begin gathering in Umuahia despite ongoing tensions.

In contrast, the NLC spokesman expressed outrage, asserting that any convention overseen by Abure would be deemed futile and lacking in legitimacy.

As the standoff persists, both parties remain entrenched in their positions, raising concerns about the future of LP’s leadership and the potential implications for the Nigerian political landscape.
