Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has donated N100 million to victims of the recent fire disaster at the Kantin Kwari Textile Market. This announcement was made during a sympathy visit to the affected traders on Thursday, according to a statement from the governor’s spokesman, Sanusi Tofa.
Support for Affected Traders
Governor Yusuf clarified that the donation is intended to support the affected traders rather than serve as compensation for their losses. He stated, “The donation is not meant to compensate you, but to support the affected traders and alleviate their suffering.”
Plans for Market Improvement
During his visit, the governor also pledged to enhance market conditions by installing solar lights, rehabilitating the road network, constructing drainage systems, and providing motorized boreholes. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining Kano’s status as the commercial hub of Northern Nigeria and West Africa.
Impact of the Fire
Hamisu Nama, the Managing Director of the Kantin Kwari Market Management Board, reported that the fire destroyed 29 shops. He expressed gratitude to the firefighters and good Samaritans who intervened swiftly to control the blaze.
Sabu’u Bako, Chairman of the Market Elders Committee, thanked Governor Yusuf for his concern and requested assistance in addressing ongoing operational issues within the market.
